By Josh Sorensen:

While students register for their spring semester classes, the faculty at CSI is busy defending the integrity of the academic curriculum. In recent months CUNY has been working on a plan to drop the general education requirement from sixty credits to thirty credits, in a proposal called the Pathways.
“The time table given to us to fully review Pathways compares to trying to shove a size sixteen lady into a size ten dress,” said Professor Sandy Cooper. “In short the CSI campus rejects the Pathways Project in its entirety.”
During a Town Hall meeting conducted by the Faculty on November 10th, The Pathways project took center stage, of 43 eligible voters 35 approved to go forward and create a resolution that would be forwarded to President Morales, who just happened to be on hand for the meeting.
The goal besides drafting up a Resolution was to alert the staff and make sure they fully understand Pathways,” said Professor Francisco Soto. “We set up an E-Mail account, drafted statements, and tried to be as fair and objective as possible.”
The resolutions from every Campus on CUNY were due on the 15th of November to CUNY headquarters inManhattan. The Task Force’s report with recommendations will be forwarded to Chancellor Goldstein on December 1st, with an announcement of the end result follow shortly after.
The ongoing trend throughout the meeting was The CSI board of directors, including President Morales, objecting to most of the resolutions and recommendations made by the Faculty, to the point that a shouting match ensued, when on of CSI’s Deans stood up and demanded that he not be pushed around by the Faculty as a whole.
After things calmed down, an interesting question came from the back of the room. “What is General Education,” The staff member said. “Will our students take in the entire college experience while enrolled here, or is this just a College that just prints out degrees for those who pay the bill?”
Some in attendance felt that CUNY’s Pathways proposals pace was too fast, given the staff at CSI only a short amount of time to revamp their whole curriculum from scratch, without fully sorting things out properly.
“The new curriculum would be watered down, eliminating several foundation courses, including some arts, sciences and history courses,” said in a letter to the Staff but the Board of trustees. “It would be a robbery to our students to not expose them to all that we offer here at CSI.”
Those going for their Bachelor’s degree will be required to fulfill the General education requirements, plus an additional 12 credits, the minimum of 60 credits is still required for an Associates and 120 credits is still needed to graduate with a bachelor’s. Those who require more information can go to the CUNY website, under Pathways Proposal.
“The Pathway Project is not educationally sound,” was the common response from several staff members. “We must do right by the student body and the College of Staten Island.”

According to Adam Shefter of ESPN, often controversial head coach of the New York Jets Rex Ryan is going to be fined f $75,000 by the NFL. The fine is in result of Coach Ryan using profane language towards a fan in attendance of the Jets-Patriots match up last Sunday night. This is Coach Ryan’s second offense.

“Shut the F#*% up,” Said Ryan. In response to the fan screaming at him “Coach Belichick is better than you.”

Coach Ryan has since publicly apologized to the incident at a press conference on Monday once the video of him cursing out the fan went viral. The fine is the least of Coach Ryan’s problems as the Jets are now regressing, slipping to 5-5 and having hope of making the playoffs dying slowly with everyday passing.

By Andrew DiLorenzo
Christmas came early this year for as the sixth annual New York Comic Con took over the Javits Convention Center this past weekend. Over 100,000 people of all ages attended the four day event, which consisted of panel discussions, special events for children, artist signings and the first showing of video games that will not be seen in stores for a while.

The convention center was set up with over 2,000 aisles featuring booths that mostly sold merchandise consisting of apparel, toys and video games.

“I bought about 200 dollars’ worth of stuff. Optimus [Prime], GIJoe, and Spawn, just to name a few,” said Matthew Campanella, a first time Comic Con attendee.

While the name of the event has the word “comic” in it, the convention itself is starting to draw away from it. Around the convention center were banks of monitors connected to different video game platforms; and inside those platforms were demo versions of new titles that will be ready for sale in early 2012. Some of those titles includedPrototype 2, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, and the much ballyhooed The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which is a Nintendo Wii exclusive.

“I waited almost an hour and a half to play [The Legend of Zelda] Skyward Sword and it was worth it, visually and aesthetically,” said Nicholas Burger, a fan who played the game.

In regards to film and television, there were two panel discussions on Saturday night that featured the biggest titles within the fandom community: AMC’s The Walking Dead and Marvel Studios’ The Avengers. With seats filling up quickly, many fans that waited on a line that stretched over 100 feet were saddened when they heard they could not get into both events. “I was determined to get in, and not believe what they [the staff at Comic Con] were telling me. You’re waiting for nothing was what they kept shouting, but I didn’t care. I waited for two hours, but still, I didn’t get in,” said Lucia Rossi, a fan of both works. The panels, both hosted by G4TV’s Chris Hardwick, featured a discussion with the cast and crew of both projects, followed by never-before-seen footage and ending with fan questions.

Fans also got the chance to finally be able to meet some of their favorite comic book artists. They met them in a room separate from the show floor, aptly named “Artists’ Alley.” Some notable artists included Tony Moore, Jim Lee, and Michael Watkins. “This is my fourth time at [New York] Comic Con, and it’s great. You see a lot of people and a lot of costumes,” Watkins said.

The biggest draw at Comic Con was the different costumes that most fans wore. Whether it was the Ghostbusters, Superman, Chewbacca or a Zombie girl, they were definitely noticed by the other attendees. “It’s my third time here, but my first time dressed up. It’s an interesting costume, so it is cool to be stopped every five seconds to have my picture taken,” said Larry Viezel, who was dressed as the “Sex Robot” from the fourth season of the Whitest Kids You Know. “It’s a win for me.”

Now that the New York Comic Con has come and gone, those who indulged can take with them many memories of their favorite moments from the weekend. For artist Watkins, his memory was very interesting. “New York Comic Con is the only place where you can see a woman dressed as a naked Lady Gaga yelling at people outside the convention center.”

The NFL trade deadline, like many other sports deadlines is for teams in contention to pick up a good piece or pieces in order to go over the top. That is the theory of the trade deadline of course; some trades however do end up backfiring on all involved. This season one team unparticular may have made itself stronger through two trades, and they are the Oakland Raiders.
Deals and Analysis:
10/11: New York Jets trade WR Derrick Mason to Houston Texans for a conditional 7th round draft pick. Many sources have dissected this deal as being made due to the fact that Mason was undermining either Brian Schottenheimer or Mark Sanchez with his post game comments and private meeting with Rex Ryan. Ryan and Tannenbaum however, claimed to make the trade out of poor production and Mason’s inability to learn and grasp the playbook. The trade may turn out to help the Texans more due to the injury to wide receiver Andre Johnson, upon Johnson’s return the Texans may have a formidable three receiver set.
10/12 & 10/18: Oakland Raiders acquire LB Aaron Curry from Seattle Seahawks for two undisclosed draft picks and Carson Palmer from the Cincinnati Bengals for a 1st round draft pick and a conditional 1st round pick in 2013. The trade for Curry bolsters their line backing corps and the Raiders hope Curry will play like the player that made him a top pick in the 2008 draft. As for Palmer the Raiders needed a quarterback with Jason Campbell injured for the season. The Bengals made the deal due to the emergence of Andy Dalton as a quality starting quarterback in his rookie season.
10/18: Detroit Lions acquire RB Ronnie Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles for RB Jerome Harrison and a 2013 draft pick. The Eagles were not satisfied with Browns production especially with LeShawn McCoy having a terrific season and the Lions need to energize their running game and Brown would help in that aspect of their game.
10/17: St. Louis Rams pick up WR Brandon Lloyd from the Denver Broncos for a 6th round pick. The Broncos made the deal to pick up a draft pick and due to Lloyds public support for Kyle Orton and his lack of support for new starter Tim Tebow, The Rams needed a receiver that could help in Sam Bradford’s continued development.
